Change of Address Checklist

Are you preparing to move to a new home? You came to the right place! In addition to the obvious moving basics like getting boxes and packing supplies, and hiring a moving company or a moving truck, there are many different people you will want to notify about your move. Make sure to do this early so you avoid missing bill payments or service interruptions.

Here is a complete list of who you need to inform about your new home.

The Post Office

This is the first place to start since notifying the post office of your change of address will ensure that any mail sent to your old address will be forwarded to your new one for 12 months. You can easily make your address update online and set it for a specific start date. We recommend doing this at least a week before moving day.

Gas and Electric

Once you know what your new address will be and the date you are moving, you will want to notify the gas and electric company of your new address. When transferring your electric service, arrange shut off at your current address to happen at the end of your moving day. Service at your new place should start either the morning of your move-in or the evening before.

Phone, Cable and Internet

Call your phone, cable and internet provider as soon as you know your new address and move-in date. We all rely heavily on internet access, so you do not want to forget to set this up in time for your move-in date, especially if you work from home. We recommend calling these utility services at least three weeks before because they may require a professional appointment.

Other Utilities

These services may include informing the water department, sewer utility company, and the garbage/recycling company of your new address.

Home Insurance

Before you move, be sure to notify your homeowner’s insurance of where they need to transfer your policy to. When you are talking to your home insurance, ask them if they cover the move itself or if you will need to purchase mover’s insurance. Additionally, be sure to notify your car insurance, life insurance, and medical insurance of your new address.

Tax Agencies

Both the federal revenue agency and your state tax agency should be informed of your change of address. The IRS makes this simple with an online form. Most states have a simple process as well on their website. Complete this step early because without informing the IRS, they will be unable to send you a tax return or stimulus check.

Social Security Administration

If you receive any type of social security benefits, do not forget to let the Social Security Administration know where you are moving. They also have a change of address form on their website.

Your Employer

Be sure to let your employer know of your new address to make sure pay stubs and tax forms get sent to your new address.

Bank and Credit Card Company

Call your bank and credit card company to make sure they have your new address on file.

Loan Providers

Before you move, you need to let your loan companies know where you will be living. Most loan companies still use a paper trail so they will need to know where to send bills and documents.

DMV

In most states, you need to update the DMV with your change of address within 30 days of the move. If you are moving out of state, you will typically need to update your vehicle registration. Be sure to bring your driver's license, vehicle registration, voters' registration, and passport with you to the DMV when you update your address.

Other Financial Agencies

If you receive services from other agencies such as a credit union, credit reporting agency, PayPal, IRA/401K administrator, or an investment account holder, be sure to update them with your new address.

Magazine Services

If you are subscribed to any magazines or subscription boxes, update your address either online or by calling they support number.

Online Shopping Sites

Don’t let your Amazon order get shipped to your old address! If you shop online frequently, update your address on these sites to make sure you do not make this mistake.

Clubs and Organizations

Notify any clubs, organizations, and charities you are involved in of your new address. This also includes memberships of places like Costco and Sam’s Club.

Personal Service Providers

Be sure to let your doctor, dentist, and veterinarian of your new address. If you are staying in the area, they will need to know your address for mailing and billing purposes. If you are moving farther away, they may be able to give you referrals.

Friends and Family

Do not forget your friends and family! Let everyone know your new address to ensure you receive holiday cards and other mail from the important people in your life.

Changing your address does take time, but once you complete this important task, you will feel less stress about your move. Be sure to take care of this task before you move to be sure everything is set up and ready to go before you start living in your new home.
